Beton7 Gallery presents the first exhibition by the visual artist group argh., entitled «Ο». Its starting point was a discussion related to the urban space as a place of settlement and establishment or as a passage, as an ensemble of locations where people have or lack the possibility of self-realization but also the exploration of the notion of hestia, the hearth or home, the residence as a par excellence personal space; a place of acceptance and security.

Countries and cities as places of transit and short or long term residence develop the weight of an osmosis between cultures, values, lifestyles, and religious beliefs, raising questions related to the liberty of openness, the feeling of homelessness, uncertainty and vagueness due to the lack of a home country, a god and spaces of worship.

argh. envision a public residence discharged from religious symbols, destined for a new personal use. It is a sculptural installation in the shape of an egg, with two openings; one close to the ground serving as an entry/exit point and the other at the top of the construction intended for gazing toward the sky. The egg, a symbol of perfection, has cosmogonic references and creates connotations of merging between two concepts continuously viewed as opposite and heterogeneous i.e. male and female, serving as an element of unification and completion.

According to Martin Heidegger “clearing-away brings forth locality preparing for dwelling.[…] Clearing-away is release of places”. The sculptural object, could thus release a “place”, a potential “dwelling” for a human or a god that has “disappeared”; an inhabitance of a being –actual or metaphysical.

The aim of the sculpture is to provide short hospitality to the passer-by, give them a few moments of semi-seclusion within the urban space, to listen to themselves, realize a pause within the constant urban flow, hopefully come by a feeling of belonging, pray, transcend.

Triggered by all the above, argh. have been obsessively collecting in the past year anything related to the egg, conceptually and morphologically. The collection consists of hundreds of textual documents related to historical, religious, cosmogonic, cultural, philosophical, literary, mythological aspects, image files from art, design, architecture, cinema, archaeological research, digital gaming, astronomy, as well as various contemporary, ovoid-shaped, physical objects.

The exhibition consists of two parts: in the first there is a partial presentation of argh.’s research and a segment of the aforementioned collection, while in the second part there is a simulation of the mental and the emotional experience that the short stay in the -still unrealized- sculpture could generate.

argh. was created in September 2016 by the visual artists Alexandra Anagnostopoulou, Ilektra Stampoulou and Mary Thivaiou.
